Trieste is a beautiful and interesting city located in a strategic
position, at the border between Italy and Slovenia, not far from
Venice, Wien, Lubjana. It stands at the northeast corner of the
Adriatic Sea, surrounded by a rocky plateau (the Carso), close to the
Alps. November is the best time to enjoy the wonderful fall colors of
our Carso. In the 19th century Trieste was one of the great ports of
the world, the chief port of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Nowadays it
is a multi-ethnical multi-religions and cosmopolitan city, with the
highest concentration of research institutes and scientists in Italy.

Founded in 1964, the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP)
operates under a tripartite agreement between the Government of Italy
and two UN agencies, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and
Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the International Atomic Energy
Agency (IAEA).
ICTP staff scientists are
international experts who do research at the cutting edge of their
fields. Constant interactions with a large number of visiting
scientists enable many of the Centre's research activities to remain at
the cutting-edge. Scientists from developed and developing countries
attending ICTP activities learn from one another in a stimulating
environment that remains responsive to the needs of world-class
scientists without neglecting the needs of researchers, particularly
young researchers from the developing world, to remain at the forefront
of their fields. The Centre sponsors a number of initiatives, including
an Associates Programme, to provide research and training opportunities
in physical sciences.
ICTP is an institution
that is run by scientists for scientists to support the best science
possible, with special attention paid to the needs of scientists from
developing countries.
